Thorium Reader is the e-book reader used to download EBSCO e-books that limit the number of users who can access an e-book simultaneously. You only need to use Thorium Reader if you are downloading the entire book, not if you are reading the e-book in your internet browser or downloading a chapter of the e-book. The vast majority of the library's EBSCO e-books can have unlimited users and do not require you to use Thorium Reader.
Downloading the book into Thorium Reader may block other Xavier users from accessing the e-book for the entire loan period or until the book is returned. Please consider reading the book in your internet browser or downloading individual chapters instead of downloading the entire book.
To download an e-book:
When you find a book to download in one of the Xavier Library's EBSCO databases:
- Log into your MyEbsco account by clicking on MyEBSCO > Sign in to MyEBSCO in the top-right corner of the webpage. You must be logged into your MyEbsco account to download books to Thorium.
- Click Download.
- Click Full eBook.
- Select your loan period and file format. Some books only provide one file format.
- Click Download. This will start downloading the file to your device.
- Once you click download, a notice about Thorium Reader will appear. If you don't have Thorium downloaded on your device, click the hyperlink that says Thorium Reader, select the appropriate download option for your device, and follow the prompts from the download wizard to download Thorium. - There are a two different ways to import your book download into Thorium:
- Click on the downloaded file in your browser's recent download history, or find the e-book file in your downloads folder. Click on the e-book file and select to open with Thorium. Your computer may remember this setting and automatically open EBSCOe-book files in Thorium in the future.
- Open the Thorium Reader on your device. Click + Import publication. Go to your downloads folder, and find and select the e-book file that you want to import.
- In order to open the e-book, you need to enter a passphrase from EBSCO. This passphrase can be found on the download menu in EBSCO.
- Don't worry if you have already closed the download menu! Return to the e-book in EBSCO, sign into your MyEBSCO account, click on Download > Full Book , and select the option to generate a new passphrase.
- The same passphrase works for all e-books in EBSCO. If you download multiple e-books in a row, you will only need to enter a passphrase once.
- Copy the passphrase and paste it into Thorium when prompted.
- You can now open and read the book in Thorium. Success!
To return an e-book:
- In Thorium, click on the three dot icon below the book to open the book menu.
- Click About Publication. Do NOT click Delete yet. This will delete the book from Thorium without returning it.
- Click Return. The book is now returned and available for other users to download.
- [Optional] Click Delete to remove the book from your books in Thorium Reader.
